A new passport is a treasured item. With it anything in the world is possible! When it arrives, there are a few things a smart traveler should do.

– Check Your Passport. When you get a passport check that all the data is correct. Is your name spelled right? Is your birthday correct? I met a traveler whose name was spelled wrong in her passport. She found out when she got to the airport and the airline would not let her board a flight as her data didn’t match.

– Sign Your Passport. Once you have verified everything is correct, sign your passport. In USA passports the signature line is on page three. Also, I do out the emergency contact page in pencil.

– Copy Your Passport. I always make a copy of my passport ID page before I travel. And not one copy but four. Two are backups I leave at home – one in my safety deposit box and one with my emergency contact. The other two copies travel with me. One gets hidden away in a secret pocket in my luggage. The other is a color copy that I laminate and put in my wallets. This is my backup ID when I travel abroad.

– Travel with Your Passport. No point having a passport and not using it. There are amazing destinations all around the world. When I get a new passport, I like to break it in as soon as I can. This time, a month after getting mine, I went up to Canada. They don’t normally stamp the passport of Americans, but I asked the border official to do it. And he did. My first stamp in my new passport. Yippee.
